DAILY GRACE, SUNDAY, JUNE 18TH, 2023 (FATHER’S DAY).

A GODLY FATHER

TEXT: PSALM 78:1-7

VERSE OF THE DAY:
_“FOR HE ESTABLISHED A TESTIMONY IN JACOB, AND APPOINTED A LAW IN ISRAEL, WHICH HE COMMANDED OUR FATHERS, THAT THEY SHOULD MAKE THEM KNOWN TO THEIR CHILDREN: THAT THE GENERATION TO COME MIGHT KNOW THEM, EVEN THE CHILDREN WHICH SHOULD BE BORN; WHO SHOULD ARISE AND DECLARE THEM TO THEIR CHILDREN”- PSALMS 78:5-6._

Today is Fathers Day and I want us to take a sobering look at what fatherhood entails. Fathering a child is, for many, not difficult. But being a father is! It is the first and most important decision of fathers: to make a conscientious choice to be a father. The decision to be a father is a daily decision. Being a good father means making tough, sacrificial decisions. Decisions that tell our children what is important to us.

Of all the fathers in the Bible, one stands out for his decision to be a godly father. His name is Mordecai. He consciously decided to be an adoptive father to his orphaned cousin, Esther. He could be called the father of courage because he instilled this trait in his daughter. Mordecai raised his daughter to take a stand at the right time, to do the right thing.

Esther must have trusted Mordecai greatly, for she determined to stand before the king for her people when she said “And if I perish, I perish.” (Esther 4:16) These were words of faith and courage. Words that a daughter could say because she was raised by a father who made the right decisions. Remember this: a crisis does not develop character; a crisis reveals character. The character Esther revealed was what she learnt from observing her father’s character.

Usually, when we study the story of Esther, we see her strength and devotion to her people. But God used someone else in this story to accomplish His purpose. God used a faithful father ~ a father who taught a young daughter to have courage in her convictions. At the right time, Esther did the right thing, because she had been raised by a godly father.

We thank God for all godly fathers who have taken a stand to be godly, responsible and available fathers to their children. To such fathers, we say happy Father’s Day!

PRAYER: Dear Lord, we bring all fathers before You today and we ask for Your grace upon their lives in Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Nigeria NGN rate hits N755/$

Nigeria has officially floated its naira currency after years of sticking with a hard peg that spooked investors and drained dollars from the economy.

The development means buyers and sellers of foreign currency in the official FX market are now allowed to quote rates they find comfortable in the FX market, as against previous practice where rates were dictated by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

The Investors & Exporters (I&E) window is now quoting a range of between N750 and N755/$, according to customers who cited emails received from their banks.

That implies a 21 percent decline in the naira compared to the previous rate of N463/$ which the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is still quoting as the I&E rate on its website. However, the last time the CBN updated the rate was June 9.

The latest move by the CBN follows President Bola Tinubu’s suspension of CBN governor Godwin Emefiele whose unorthodox monetary policies had become a stumbling block to investors and the economy.

The exchange rate could go as high as N800 by the end of today, according to some bankers, who say an initial knee-jerk reaction could cause the naira to weaken sharply before recovering some lost ground.

“Given that this new rate in the official market is the same as the parallel market, there is no incentive for people and businesses with genuine transactions to patronize the parallel market, hence FX trading activity in the parallel market will slow down significantly,” Abiola Rasaq, an economist and former head of investor relations at United Bank for Africa.

“Subsequently, the official market should attract more FX supply and rate should gradually ease in the I&E window, and such would cause rates in the parallel market to also ease,” Rasaq said.

The CBN’s next move should be to prioritise supply of dollars to support the naira float.

“The convergence of the rates is only the first step, the next step is the most crucial and that is to boost supply into the market,” a source told BusinessDay.

“No foreign investor will come without a hedge and that can only come when there is assurance of supply. That’s the hard work,” the source said.

Another knowledgeable source is of the view that allowing the market to determine the FX rate is only the first of six steps to fixing Nigeria’s broken FX market.

The second step must be to provide a hedge mechanism that is priced in line with the market while the third step is to ensure market yields are attractive to Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPI).

The next steps are to ensure transparency and remove all controls around domiciliary accounts. Finally, there is also a need to clear the dollar backlog in the market in order to attract FPIs.

“The focus is on supply,” the source said.

Expectations are high after the initial move to fix Nigeria’s broken FX market.

Chidi Uzo, a fund manager at Stanbic IBTC Pension Managers Ltd, said the move was “a bold step in the right direction.”

“However this should go in tandem with the lifting of capital restrictions for investors waiting on the sidelines to repatriate their funds. We expect foreign investor participation to be swayed by the extent to which capital is allowed to flow freely,” Uzo said.

“Overall, the effective harmonisation of Nigeria’s multiple exchange rates by allowing market forces to determine the fair value of the naira should immediately reverse the multi-year widening spreads between the official exchange rate and the parallel market exchange rates,” he said.

DO YOU DESERVE OUR RESPECT?

TEXT: TITUS 2:7

VERSE OF THE DAY:
_“RESPECT EVERYONE, LOVE OTHER BELIEVERS, HONOUR GOD, AND RESPECT THE EMPEROR”- 1 PETER 2:17._

Some people believe that because they are rich, powerful, or famous, they deserve our respect regardless of their behaviour. Actually, nothing could be further from the truth. Respect must be earned; it is not awarded.

When we were young, we were taught to respect our parents, siblings, teachers, elders, rules of the house and laws of the land. We were also taught to be tolerant of other people’s ideas and respect their opinions. As we got older, we became more discerning. Now, we offer respect to people who behave properly, on a consistent basis and we shake our heads, often in sadness and pity, at those who think that respect is measured by the size of their pockets or the job title they possess.

The bottom line is that everyone is entitled to be treated with kindness, but that does not necessarily mean that they have earned the right to be respected. Some people demand respect because of their age, wealth, or position. Others feel entitled to respect because they are popular, have a big office, or have won awards. Others think that everyone deserves respect regardless of their actions. The truth is, many of them don’t even respect themselves.

It does not matter whether you are young or old, rich or poor, work on the top floor or down in the basement, everyone earns respect the same way. You cannot require respect or demand it. You cannot cut deals or take shortcuts to earn respect. You cannot buy respect or even place a price tag on it, because respect is priceless. You earn it every day.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, help me to respect myself, Amen.

THE CHANNEL THROUGH WHICH GOD KEEPS US

TEXT: 2 SAMUEL 22:3-4

VERSE OF THE DAY:
_“BUT THE LORD IS FAITHFUL. HE WILL ESTABLISH YOU AND GUARD YOU AGAINST THE EVIL ONE”- 2 THESSALONIANS 3:3._

The channel through which God keeps us is that of our Faith in Him. We are guarded by the power of God operating through our faith. In every experience of life, God offers us His keeping power; faith receives this, and as we receive, so we are kept. All we have to do is to trust Him, receive what He offers and lean on Him.

When you are tempted to sin, fear or to despair, just look to God and trust in Him, you will be shielded by God’s power. God’s purpose is to keep you and your part is to simply put your trust in Him. As you do this, you will be shielded by God’s power until the coming of the Lord.

You need to be kept from the power of the flesh within. You need to be kept from indwelling sin, for you still possess the old Adamic nature and this nature is unchanged, powerful and very assertive [Romans 8:2].

We need to be kept from the power of the world. We are in danger of being allured by its attractions and its evils [John 2:15-17]. We need to be kept from the power of the Devil around us. He is a powerful foe and always seeking our downfall. Sometimes he comes as an angel [2 Corinthians 11:14]; and sometimes as a roaring lion [1 Peter 5:8].

Our mind needs to be kept in peace. Our mind needs fortification and freedom from doubt, despair, depression, and discouragement [Isaiah 26:3]. Our heart needs to be kept. It needs to be kept free from fear [Isaiah 41:10]; from worry [Philippians 4:7]; and from anxiety [Psalm 37:1].

Our will needs keeping. It is powerless to do the thing that pleases God unless the Lord takes control of it [Philippians 2:13]. Our whole spirit, soul and body need to experience the keeping power of God. Our personality needs to be kept [Thessalonians 5:23].

PRAYER: Dear Lord, shield me from the evil of this world in Jesus’ name, Amen.
